Dr Kirksey has a profound appreciation for the life-changing nature of chronic disease and the wide-reaching affects to those around us. During his last year of medical school his father experienced a worsening lung condition which ultimately caused his death several months into Dr Kirksey’s intern training. "It was devastating but it taught me how fortunate I was to have the opportunity to help people and how life changing illness is to every family. I keep that feeling with me when I care for patients today. It reminds me that there are a number of things that are important outside of the primary medical condition"
Dr Kirksey completed his training in General Surgery followed by specialized training in Vascular Surgery, the treatment of the medical and surgical management of disorders of the blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease is responsible for the death of one in two Americans. On some level, it seems that society has become desensitized to the fact that vascular disease is preventable. "I feel strongly that your health is a significant predictor of your quality of life. Everyone can understand that if you’re energetic and optimistic, you will deal with the challenges that life presents much better"
After entering a busy private practice, he quickly came to realize that as rewarding as the treatment of vascular disease is, both by medicine and with surgery, there was a significant lack of preventative and proactive strategies available to people.
"I would see people who just had a major life-threatening surgery and I would be talking to them in there follow up appointment and cigarettes would fall out of their pocket."
"The recognition that if I might create a program that has equally important components that all contribute to our overall well being was intriguing." There are a number of programs that emphasize single areas but human beings are complex creatures and we have a number of important facets to our behavior.
Lee Kirksey MD, a Board Certified Vascular Surgeon and Clinical Professor of Surgery at TheUniversity of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is a sought after speaker on the topic of healthcare disparities within the African American community. In practical terms, he describes the inequalities that exist in the United States healthcare system for a rapidly increasing, neglected minority. Dr Kirksey offers several unique theories regarding the causes of these inequities.
As an active, practicing physician Dr Kirksey is not just concerned with theory. The proprietary Optimal Health program is created to guide the individual to improved personal health through a multi level approach. He describes information on the proprietary program that he has developed to improve individual health.
Using an uncanny ability to simplify complex medical information and communicate this in easy-to-use fashion. He communicates in an effective manner that generates understanding, action and individual results.
Significantly, individual health is important for each of us. It impacts us and our loved ones on a daily basis. It affects absenteeism and productivity in the small business that we head. And the economic impact of the healthcare and the prevention of chronic disease by preventative, proactive strategies in corporations across the United States is well known.
In a humorous way, Dr Kirksey states, "I want to teach you how to stay out of my office. I guess that I’m trying to put myself out of business. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of illness and death in men and women in the United States. It is responsible for more deaths than the next thirteen causes. One in two Americans will die of heart disease and that statistic is increased for African Americans and Hispanics. The consequences of heart disease include heart attack, stroke and limb loss.
